Lensgreve Johann Friedrich Struensee (5 August 1737 – 28 April 1772) was a German-Danish physician, philosopher and statesman. He became royal physician to the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark-Norway and a minister in the Danish government. He rose in power to a position of de facto regent of the country, and he tried to carry out widespread reforms. His affair with Queen Caroline Matilda ("Caroline Mathilde") caused a scandal, especially after the birth of a daughter, Princess Louise Augusta, and was the catalyst for the intrigues and power play that caused his downfall and dramatic death.

Karolina Matylda Britská (dánsky: Caroline Mathilde; 22. července 1751, Londýn – 10. května 1775, Celle) byla díky sňatku s králem Kristiánem VII. v letech 1766 až 1772 dánská a norská královna.

Karolina Matylda, nejmladší dcera Frederika, prince z Walesu, a princezny Augusty Sasko-Gothajské, která se narodila až po smrti svého otce, byla vychována v rodinné atmosféře mimo královský dvůr. V patnácti letech se provdala za svého bratrance, krále Kristiána VII. Dánského a Norského, který trpěl duševní chorobou a ke své ženě byl po celou dobu manželství chladný. Měla dvě děti, budoucího Frederika VI. a Luisu Augustu, jejímž biologickým otcem mohl být německý lékař Johann Friedrich Struensee.
